Heroes
In Terra Heroum, anybody can become a Hero if they put in the effort. This is as true in character as out of character. Any player with a significantly upgraded character has the potential to become a Hero and join the official pantheon. Becoming a Hero is equivalent to joining the highest ranks socially, religiously, and politically. Heroes are the life blood of Terra Heroum and often acquire unique and fantastic powers through the course of their adventures. Below is a record of all the Heroes of the past (and present should any current characters reach this level). The specific details of what becoming a Hero means for your character mechanically and otherwise will be explained upon reaching this status, but I'll give you a hint: It's nothing but awesome.Hero King Dragoon
Founder of civilization and the first Hero. His race is unknown, but it is known that Cynthia was his child that took after her mother. He is regarded by all as both a spiritual and political symbol and still respected and praised to this day for his deeds.
Hero of the Sword, Arthur
The Human student of the Hero King Dragoon, who brought an end to the civil war between the three races following the passing of the Hero King and established the High Council as the highest level of government. He was the first Human representative on the High Council.
Hero of the Shield, Bagan
The first Beastfolk representative on the High Council and friend of the Hero King Dragoon, who defended the capital from a fierce dragon while a powerful sleeping curse placed on the army was cured to allow a counterattack.
Hero of the Bow, Cynthia
The first Elven representative on the High Council and the Elven child of the Hero King Dragoon, who not only lead the counterattack against the dragon that Bagan had stopped but also slew the Horror that had allied itself with the dragon to take down the capital.
Archmage Hero Valentine
Powerful Human Mage who brought down a Phantasm-worshipping cult of mages that was plotting another war and established the first formal school for magic. The school remains in the capital to this day. With Varthan's help, he was able to learn much about the nature of Horrors and their relation to Pact magic.
Spellsword Hero Varthan
Elven Mage who was the companion of Valentine. Slew the Horror that was the head of the cult and went on to establish a school for warriors who wield blade and magic in tandem. His teachings are mostly passed down from master to student.
The Invincible Hero
An unusual hero who, like the Hero King Dragoon, has an uncertain identity. The title of Hero was one of the cases where it was given posthumously, only because it was brought to the world's attention long after the deed itself was done. Supposedly the Invincible Hero single-handedly defended an entire village for several months against a mass of bandits, but it's not certain what village or where this took place. Enough people know the tale and defend it to make the unknown individual a Hero.
Dark Knight Hero Morden
A hero clad in black and red armor that inspired many pragmatists in his wake. Though chastised by many as a fallen Paladin, his methods allowed him to infiltrate the ranks of a growing movement intended to try and violently bring about a new regime. It is said that in the ensuing conflict of him slaying every member of that movement, his blade was permanently stained red with their blood. His methods were foul, but his deeds undeniable and thus he was granted the status of a Hero.
Necrotic Hero Demetrik
An unlikely hero, a small Elf Mage who delved in less than savory sorts of magics, but ended up saving Cydonia from destruction by a siege of Phantasms. His choice of Necromantic magics forever stains him in the eyes of many, but there are those that view him as a very pragmatic individual.
Enduring Hero Ardorin
A Human Warrior that was the first to brave the cold of the northern mountains and map out a large portion of the north, as well as shedding light on many species of Phantasms that resided in the cold.
Hunting Hero Deerfar
A Beastfolk Rogue who followed in the footsteps of Ardorin, known for his unique snow-white deer hide armor that allowed him to blend into his surroundings. He achieved Hero status when he discovered a mage hiding in the snowy reaches building an army to siege Dracon and managed to sabotage the army to the point where they could not even make it out of the north.
Unlikely Hero Barlift
A Beastfolk Warrior that went from common carpenter to Hero through his adventures. His tale is a popular one for its true symbolism that "anybody can be a Hero", much like the Hero King Dragoon, but it always seems to be a little bit embellished with each telling. The only accurate version of his story is contained in the Temple of Dragoon, but his status as a Hero is unquestioned.
Hero of Hookshire, Owane Submitted by Melon
Hookshire is a small village that never was put on the map. Owane was an ex knight who moved there to work as a simple carpenter. But when a dragon went to attack the village he led a small group of men, who went and killed the beast. Making him the hero of Hookshire. A more recent local Hero that was officially recognized by the Temple of Dragoon.
Red Hero Galathine Submitted by Kozeph
An Elf and exiled Cydonian knight. Galanthine was exiled for loving the daughter of then Elven Representative. Galanthine lived as an adventurer in Ba'dagar but when a horde of Goblins invaded the Cydonian Woods, Galanthine returned home and with a company of adventures. Galathine led his allies in the battle and rode through the Goblin host slaying the Goblin king and his generals. Yet by the time the battle was over, Galanthine and his steed were covered in so many wounds that they were stained in red. Galanthine died from the wounds he sustained but his leadership and actions broke the horde, his exile was lifted and he became the a Hero, seen as an example of loyalty and bravery.
The Martyred Hero, May Prevedell Submitted by Saxman
May Prevedell was recognized as a hero after nearly single-handily protecting a small village from wave after wave of attacking Phantasms. When the leader of the Phantasms revealed itself as a great dragon, she and her husband rode after it and killed it. Her life was tragically ended when she discovered her husband's pact with a phantasm and he killed her for it.
The Disgraced Hero, Tommen Prevedell Submitted by Saxman
Tommen Prevedell achieved his hero status as the messenger for his wife to warn surrounding villages of a phantasm army. After the deed was done, Tommen and his wife faced the dragon commanding the other phantasms alone and killed it. He was disgraced after it was found out that he had become a pact-mage. To protect himself he killed his own wife and family, uttering the same words over and over again. "I'm sorry. I can't."
Legends
Inescapably tied to the nature of Heroes are Legends, the tales of slaying dragons and saving maidens that make the deeds of Heroes immortal. Not all Heroes are those who make legends, but rather, some are the ones who fulfill legends. While there are numerous ways to make your character a Hero, the easiest that anybody knows is to fulfill a legend. To make it simple, Legends are end-game level Quests that characters may take on if they feel confident in their ability to complete. They do not have to be done solo, but all who go in may not come out Heroes. It ultimately depends on the Legend. Some may not even be difficult to complete at all, but it is impossible to tell the ones that are difficult from the ones that aren't, so assume all of them are. Legends are considered to be common knowledge, so generally if you go into a town someone will have heard of at least one of these legends. Those who fail are just as famous as those who succeed, so you only get one shot at completing a particular Legend. They are not easy, nor are they friendly to failure, but they are meant to be the final test of those who think they're ready to become the stuff of...well, legend. Even if you succeed and become a Hero, how you did it can also be important.
Below will be the running list of active and completed legends, though right now it will only contain active ones (since nobody is end-game level yet).Name: The Invincible Hero
Story: While many agree that the Invincible Hero died long ago, some claim that they still wander the world to this day. A glimpse here, a sighting there, but nothing truly definitive. Many have tried to find them but none have succeeded.
Name: The Castle in the Desert
Story: Deep in the sands of the desert, legend tells of an impenetrable castle. The lord of this castle is blind and the sole knight cannot walk properly, but nobody has managed to claim what lies inside. Supposedly a vast fortune is kept within, the remnants of a small desert kingdom that vanished overnight leaving only the two remaining.
Name: The Diamond of Magic
Story: Legends speak of a stone that allows the owner to command magic simply by holding the stone. It is said to be found in the heart of a volcano, guarded by a powerful dragon.
Name: The Black Tower
Story: An ominous tower that manifests off the shore every hundred years or so, beckoning individuals to enter its depths. Nobody knows what is inside the tower, as all who have entered have not returned.
Name: The Tale of the Forge
Story: A saying known by many Blacksmiths throughout the kingdom, and something any who would search for better forging methods will find: "When the sky is black and the moon is red, only when the flame burns green can the ultimate blade be forged."
Name: Sword of the Hero King
Story: After the Hero King's success in creating Terra Heroum, in some versions of the tale it states that the Hero King traveled beyond the mountains and dangers of the land in search of his final resting place. In these versions of his tale, it is said that those who can find his final resting place may claim his sword.
Name: Fall of the Titans
Story: Long ago, before the Hero King, the Titans were made. Their purpose is unknown, but they remain as reminders of the great powers that were at work before the Terrans took control. They do not move, but inscriptions at their base state: "May their blade only face a worthy adversary."
Name: The Lost Sword of Galanthine Submitted by Kozeph
Story: The sword of Galanthine named Almace was said to imbue the wielder with the magical constitution, it was kept as an Elven Relic and the Heirloom of his descendants but it was stolen by the descendants of the surviving adventurers. It has been missing for 400 years but has surfaced from time to time. It is said that Cydonia will reward whoever returns Almace and it is known that the descendants of Galanthine still scour the lands looking for the sword.
Name: Hero Eater, Burthan Submitted by Saxman
Story: There are rumors that deep within the Cydonian Woods lives a large dragon known as Burthan. A Phantasm well versed in the draconic magics of fire and flight, Burthan has made a habit of devouring any wannabe Hero who dared approach him. His magnificent horde is said to hold many enchanted weapons and armors and a great abundance of gold. Anyone who could defeat the dragon would undoubtedly be hailed as a hero.
Name: The Goblin King Submitted by Merlin
Story: The being responsible for increasing Goblin and Ogre raids upon the City-States of Terra Heroum. Although the being in question is referred to as "The Goblin King", many speculate it is not a Goblin at all-- But none have seen the great phantasm responsible for bolstering and commanding these armies from afar, so it is known only as the Goblin King. Nothing is known of the King, besides that they must be a Phantasm of extraordinary power, and at least capable of giving out pacts to the Terran races. But as the green skinned hordes become bolder and bolder at striking out at the Terrans populations, it is only a matter of time before somebody tracks down and puts an end to the unseen King. Anyone who managed the task would certainly gain renown as a hero across all of Terra Heroum.
Name:The Disgraced Hero Submitted by Saxman
Story: After Tommen Prevedell's outing as a pact-mage, he fled and was hunted down. While officially he's dead, legend has it that he managed to survive and has grown into something, less than human because of his pact. Whatever and wherever he is, he is a danger to the free people of Terra Heroum.
