appearance, For those of you whom are blind and cannot see the above picture but are having someone read this appearance section to you so they know what this dude looks like: One, sorry about the whole blind thing. Two, let me paint you a picture with words. Picture the Mona Lisa: Now get rid of that and substitute in a medium sized, tan dude with some bitchin' white hair. Throw some basic priestly garb on that bad boy, a red overcoat because they're badass, and sprinkle some crosses on that bastard and you have yourself what Marut looks like. | personality, Neutral Good: Of the second variety. Marut believes doing good things in the world is his duty as a citizen in it, and so actively strives to do what he can to help others. He uplifts Heroes as the model all citizens should strive to become, and practices what he preaches. However on the flip side, he has a tendency to look down on those whom display selfishness or impassiveness in the face of evil. However given that he's as biased as anybody else he sometimes fails to see these things in close friends of his, especially those he met as an Orphan. Technical Pacifist: Marut claims to be a Pacifist. This is his shitty attempt at being a joke, because he is in no manner incapable of or unwilling to beat someone senseless. Granted one cannot really be a pacifist and survive in a world of monsters, so he justifies his reliance on Violence despite it not being "the best solution", is that while it is sometimes not the answer, it is an answer that can be relied on. He prefers nonviolent solutions these days however, due to the whole Priest thing. Good is not Soft: Despite his good intentions and caring disposition, traces of his time as little more than a thug on the street remain. Marut's concept of "Mercy" is extremely poor against those whom threaten the well beings of others or are guilty of past sins. While this is not to say he's completely unforgiving, it does mean that he will stop giving Orphans candy long enough to tear out a criminal's spine and then resume as if nothing occurred. Dispensing justice is just a part of his duty, after all. Street Urchin: Marut grew up this way, due to being a bastard child in a foreign land. Without anyone to really help him as a child he has become a very self-reliant individual, choosing not to confide much in others. Due to his profession he is not socially strained or awkward and can thrive in social situations, but has difficulty confiding in even those few people he trusts. Because of this he winds up stewing on things for a while and sometimes comes off as a stereotypical drama queen. "It's nothing" doesn't always mean it's nothing, if you know what I mean. Also due to his upbringing he has some lingering resentment towards the upper class, and while he has mellowed out on it a lot since becoming a priest, he is not entirely past it. Badass Cape: Tell me I'm wrong, I dare you. |
history,
Marut, born Maruna, is an individual from humble origins. And by that I mean he's an orphan. And not the dead-parents kind, which is actually rather unusual given the frequency of death-by-being-stabbed-in-the-face of Terra Heroum, or being eaten, or turning into a Horror, or etc. Point is there are a lot of ways to become an Orphan, and "A Foreign emissary boned your mom and left and then she decided she didn't want to raise you so she dumped you on the streets" isn't at the top of it. Only a child, Marut was fortunate enough to be taken in by some complete strangers. He was unfortunate enough for said strangers to be the equivalent of a Street gang, whom stole from and extorted the slums and poor of Dracon.
Marut was raised by the pack of thieves and criminals as more of an errand boy than anything. He was taught to resent the upper classes of society, scorning them for all that they had but did not share. Due to his foreign appearance he didn't fit in even among the other street rats of Dracon, and he directed the resentment at being rejected on those of wealth and class; His parents specifically, though he never got the chance to meet them.
As one would expect, being raised by a thug would cause someone to logically become a thug themselves. Petty thief and criminal, by the time he was a young teenager Marut was already well on his way to either winding of dead in a ditch or hanging from the stockades. Luckily, he found religion. Like, literally. Happening upon an icon of the ancient Hero King Dragoon, Marut concocted a plan to rob one of the Temples of Dragoon. He arrived at the temple and "returned" the icon to the temple, managing to convince them to let him stay for a few days, while he plotted how he'd clean the place out of it's valuables.
Fortunately or unfortunately, this was never meant to be. By the end of his short stay, Marut could not find it within himself to rob the place. The Priest who had allowed him sanctuary had proven himself to be an honest, hospitable man whom had given away nearly all he had, and had virtually nothing to steal. Feeling genuinely guilty for one of the first times in his life, Marut confessed what he had planned to the elderly Priest and asked for his forgiveness. The man offered Marut everything Marut could carry took take with him when he left. Awe-struck, Marut made the decision to abandon his life as a criminal and devote himself to Hero Worship, as this Priest had done.
Marut became a diligent student of the Priest, receiving an education for the first time. In this time he gained the ability to read and write, and was educated in a vast number of topics; Namely, the catalog of Heroes and their worship attributed to the Priests of Dragoon. Fast forward a few years, and Marut now works as a priest himself, maintaining the Temples in which Hero worship is performed. Namely however, he is a powerful advocate of the power of the individual: The ability to rise up from whatever your stock or situation in life, and become the Heroes so revered by the world. He strives to be a good, charitable, law-abiding Priest and model citizen that even a Hero could be proud of.
This is made rather complicated by the fact that he's kind of buddies with the Grey Fox. Remember those street urchin days? He formed a lasting friendship with one particular youth named Robin, whom as it turns out would grow up to be a master thief whom mere whispers of have caused a legend to form. So between helping him "stay out of trouble" while trying to stay a not-shitty Priest, Marut has rather stressful moments from time to time these days.
