The showdown of the century, in a very different way than a certain other debate that had gone on. The infamous shady merchant that can get you anything for a price under the guise of a fairy Beastfolk, and the honest merchant that always makes sure you get the right deal for any good product under the guise of a manticore Beastfolk. The perpetual rivalry of mercantile across Terra Heroum with most of the crowd having some investment. After all, with all their travelling there weren't many who didn't know these Merchants in some capacity.
The two were set up on a stage, each with a podium and with the announcer located between them. They were all positioned as such that the crowd could see their faces. The announcer was a human male, dressed for the occasion and hired by the Representative to help run the debate.
"Welcome everybody to another round of this year's Declaration of Intellect! My name is Hans and I will be your announcer for today's events. On stage today I have two prominent individuals in the economic world, so let's see who's going to get you the bang for your buck!"
From his own podium, Hans pulled out a small piece of parchment and set it down in front of him, clearing his throat before continuing.
"Without further adieu, the topic for this Declaration of Intellect is...'Switching from Gold pieces as currency to a paper-based alternative currency is a smart decision'. Let's see what these two carriers of coin have to say about this! Ms. Popov, you will be going first. Pick whichever side of the topic you feel comfortable with and start us off."
The stage was set, the cards were dealt, it was time to see how these two would handle the issue thrown at them.

I FEEL IT ALL IN THE CENTER OF MY HEART you're the love of my life The young merchant was happy to be on stage. She was the face of her business and she flourished when she was put in front people. She had spent a fair amount of the morning to make sure she looked the best she could. Her dress was covered in white frills and pink ribbons. She wore a small hat on her head with plenty of pink ribbons that hung down on one side. She had a constant small smile.
Her opponent couldn't have been a better one for her. She had heard of the infamous 'Shady Merchant'. She was eager to get to know this woman a little more, but they were set up as opponents for this. Someone in charge of management for this event must be having a laugh at them right now. It didn't bother her. She would use this debate as an opportunity to scope out the personality of Dervla and prepare to get to better know her. She would see if the 'corruption' her opponent was known for would show itself in this debate.
She couldn't help letting her amusement show when the announcer made a pun. They were certainly having a giggle at them now. Her expression shifted from amusement to surprise and intrigue at the announcement of the debate topic. It was something that she had heard of being done, but only in unusual situations or in remote areas.
Nina cleared her throat after the announcer gave her the floor. "Thank you Hans~" She gave a short curtsy. "As a well-traveled merchant, the topic of this debate is something I have thought about from time to time. Some of you probably know me, but I am Nina Popov. I may be a beastfolk, but my storefront isn't limited to just Ba'dagar. I've seen every major city and let me tell you that gold coins are flowing like a fountain if you know what your customers want. However, have you ever thought what would happen if we ever ran out of the gold that makes those coins?" Like any good speaker she allowed the crowd a brief period to think of a response to her question. "Something like that will likely not happen in the near future what with the Draconian Mountains being hardly mined and the old dragon's hoards filling the treasury, but someday we could see a time when we run out of gold to make into coins."
"The effects of this are pretty simple. Gold would be harder to come by." Nina kept her ever pleasant smile on even while talking about these topics that would be pretty detrimental to any merchant. She unconsciously tugged on her dress to get any wrinkles out of it. "For those who have the means to survive even this is not a big deal. Farmers will still grow crops. Miners will still find ore. Hunters will still have meat and pelts. Who this would really affect is those in the merchant guilds and the councils that rule over this land. They don't have the means to make their own goods. They have to buy it from those who have it."
She was beginning to wish she had a flow chart for this. "To sum up the process quickly. The council will need more money so taxes will rise putting pressure on the citizens. A lack of coins among the citizens will lead to unrest which breeds rebellion if the councils aren't able to handle the unrest."
"So not only would the council benefit from this, but so would everyone else in avoiding such a fate." She beamed a smile to the crowd. "Now I could go on and on about how this would work. Basically the paper 'notes' would be distributed by the treasury and would have the same value of gold. As long as we don't water down the market with too many of these paper notes there wouldn't be a problem in using them, and the gold exchanged for the notes would make up their value."
She paused briefly to collect her thoughts.
"To make my stance perfectly clear, switching from gold coins to paper notes as currency wouldn't be the easiest idea, but it is definitely a smart idea. It is a preemptive strike against a terrible future that may await us. words If I had a coin for every word here this debate wouldn't mean a thing |
