Races
There are three races that dominate Terra Heroum as the civilized beings: Humans, Elves, and Beastfolk. These three are the playable races. It is possible for mixed-breeds between these races to exist, but at character creation you have to pick from one side or the other for racial skills. When you make a character, you get one racial skill.
Beastfolk are humanoid beings with some mix of beast or Phantasm heritage that causes them to manifest traits of both. This makes them something of a grab-bag, as the amount of humanoid versus non-humanoid traits that manifest depends from person to person. Some are simply humans with the ears and tail of an animal, such as a cat, while some may be more aptly described as true hybrids with great claws and thick hides. Some are even more physically an animal than man, developing as bipedal versions of their animal counterpart. Most manifest traits of normal animals such as cats, dogs, birds, may be some wolves. There are some with a bit more uncommon heritage, such as half-men-half-horses. The rare ones though are the ones that manifest the traits of more powerful Phantasms, such as half-dragons. Beyond these though, Beastfolk often can appear much like humans or elves and can even disguise themselves as one of the other races if their beast-like traits are subtle enough.
Beastfolk are known to favor deeds over heritage, knowing first hand that one's appearance or bloodline does not determine who they might be. Their entire culture as a racial group could be considered a meritocracy. For many, they rely on tests of strength or physical prowess due to the natural abiliies of Beastfolk. Their lifespans range from under a human's lifespan at around 50 years to around 120 years, depending on their heritage.

Elves are humanoids with pointed ears of varying lengths and more often thin physiques, but this is not true for all Elves. Their hair tends to more often be blonde in some regard, be it platinum or golden, but it's not a given for all Elves. While their skin tones are typically more Caucasian, some have more pale complexions and others exist on the other end of the spectrum with literal midnight black skin. There are even some that come with blue skin if you look in the right places. What Elves may lack in physical power they make up for in precision and grace. Their ears are also not for show, as elves tend to demonstrate sharper senses and are much more aware of the area around them. There is often competition on the market for bloodhound Beastfolk and Elves as bodyguards and trackers. It's difficult to get the drop on a well-trained Elf, and even more difficult to beat one in a duel. Their minds are stronger than those of Beastfolk or Humans and make them more resilient against particular kinds of magic.
Elves are known to place lineage on a pedestal within their culture. They do not shun the merit-based Hero system, but they believe the ideal Elf has the bloodline and the skill. They also have longer lifespans than those of Beastfolk or Humans, averaging between 100-200 years old. They value perfection and precision, often taking many years to ensure they are masters of their craft.

Humans are humanoids with more rounded ears and no real extraordinary physical traits. Their hair comes in most varieties of color and length and their skin is typically in more "natural" tones, ranging between a more natural pale and dark browns, with everything in between. They aren't as strong as Beastfolk nor as graceful as Elves, but Humans have the market on tenacity. They adapt to whatever circumstances they are put in and can endure seemingly impossible circumstances. It could be said that Humans are type-cast in that they do almost anything. There is no "favored" direction for humans except perhaps for efficiency. They are also typically the first to be called upon for exploration because of their natural-born refusal to give up and fall over, so if somewhere isn't mapped then it's really difficult to get to.
A Human is somewhat average in lifespan, typically living to around 70-80 years.
