appearance For the most part, Joran appears very much as an average member of the human race. He stands at an average height and is clearly in good shape. A trait of his that attracts attention, though, would be the gray hair that is usually uncharacteristic to a man his age. This is resultant of genes gained from his father, whose hair was in a similar way at a young age. If anything, the premature graying of his hair lends well to his gray eyes. Being busy with running a business, a few days without shaving leaves him with a slight goatee growing on his face, though he usually gets to it before it goes out into a proper beard. His work scheduling also leaves him with soft circles forming under his eyes from the occasional night with little sleep. | personality From a young age - and after having held several jobs - Joran had always known the importance of hard work. It also instilled an opinion that dedication and perseverance were the most important qualities to a man; giving up could not be considered an option if one was going to make any progress in their life. On an individual basis, this leads him to expect a good bit from everyone else. The work he does nowadays does take up a bit of his time. With the company he keeps in the shop, it almost runs him ragged, leading to something of a grumpy demeanor after a long day of work. But if he'd learned anything by being a business owner, it was that being able to negotiate a price - or many other things - in a professional manner was a skill necessary to making it through the day. If, however, he is able to get away and decompress from the stress of running his shop, Joran can be found to be a rather enjoyable personality. Being the owner of a business is still somewhat stressful, and with the shop being in the near-debt that it is, worries about the state of his livelihood are almost always on his mind. |
history
Growing up in Andor, Joran had very much the normal childhood. There were never are real worries during the early years of his life, but as he grew older it became more clear to him that his family was far from perfect. For one thing, despite being able to grow up living a normal life, he learned that his father squandered a portion of their family earnings each month on a gambling addiction. To make up for the lower funds that his family was clearing working with, Joran found himself with his first job at a somewhat young age. Being a young boy at the time, most of his work entailed carting packages across town as a little courier and took on more physically intensive work as he grew taller and stronger.
The strangest day of his life was when he received notice from the post that his grandfather, who lived on the other side of the city, had passed. More surprising was that ownership of the old man's shop, Relics and Oddities, had been transferred to Joran's name; an unexpected inheritance. On the one hand, this elevated the young man from his now former tasking in menial labor to - as you guess - ownership of his own business. On the other hand, however, there was a bit of friction with his father brought about by this development. Others in his family understood why he had been chosen instead - with his father's debts growing ever higher - but it still served to drive a wedge between himself and his father. It certainly did make the family dinners more awkward for him. Perhaps that made it better that he was moving across Andor to run his new shop. Even better, the shop held living quarters on the second floor of the building.
On his first day as proprietor of Relics and Oddities, he had the profound displeasure of meeting his one and only employee; perhaps the laziest of the Beastfolk in Terra Heroum - Kairu Ao. Every day of the first few months owning the shop seemed to drag on as the young man would come downstairs from his room to find little work to be done, with Kairu doing even less. Day after day began to mesh together as each one held the same routine: Wake up. Set up the shop for the day. Wait for the few customers that would pop in. Go to sleep. But one day, the young man came to an unfortunate conclusion; after only his first month as owner, he could see that the shop was not making the sales that were needed to keep afloat. For the risk to his livelihood, he saw no choice but to look into the life of an adventurer, seeking out treasures - and perhaps some new merchandise for his shop.
