Type of Lore: Legend
Name of Lore: The Defier
Details:
"The Balance of Ma'at will be restored."
-Said by the Defier before every battle
The Defier is a rather plain looking knight who wanders the land eternally. There was a time where he was mistaken for the Invincible Hero but the Defier's ambiguity in his actions has quickly silenced this theory. The Defier is considered one of the Great Wonders of Terra Heroum as he is mentioned in text as appearing somewhere around 600 years ago during a major battle between Terrans and a hoard of Dragons in the Draconian mountains. He is described in Lore as calmly walking the battlefield, not paying mind to either side until he was struck in the crossfire by a Dragon's breath and a Mage's spell. This caused The Defier to consider this a challenge and he proceeded to completely destroy both armies using one of the only techniques he is confirmed to possess: Landslide Blade.
Since this time The Defier has wandered the land, and the only words he has ever uttered have been those related to the mysterious "Balance of Ma'at" that even today no scholar can find any true reference to. He is considered Immortal and Unstoppable, but does not take any aggressive action whatsoever towards any being. It is known that the Defier does eat and sleep, but these events can be months, even years apart and there is no rhyme or reason to the timing. There was an incident 200 years ago where the Defier ate an entire Inn's stock of food before walking off calmly. There was an incident 20 years after that where a kind girl gifted the Defier a single apple, and he leaned against her house and slept there until the day that girl grew old and died.
The Defier is named as such due to his inability to follow rules and laws, along with his raw resistance to death. He has been known to take the full onslaught of the most learner mages, the most horrible Phantasmals, and even the most stalwart heroes and remain standing. It seems to stem from some form of regeneration factor, as he has had his arms cut, his intestines ripped and his head lopped off and he appears to regrow them all within seconds. The regeneration also passes to his armor, which seems to be made of common metals and is easily pierceable. If you can destroy the armor and are attempting to find out who he is only further enigma will meet you. The Defier is male, but completely skinless and eyeless underneath his armor and possesses only two holes where his ears should be, making it impossible to identify his race. It is also known that there is no barrier that can stop the Defier. He will walk across the floor of the sea, he will walk into a steel wall until his body applies enough raw pressure that allows him to crush it as he passes through.
The Defier's armor is known to possess one enchantment, a great magic that is lost to Terrans known as Sanctuary. Sanctuary activates when The Defier enters any city, town, village or overall living space. The spell produces an impenetrable barrier that makes it nigh impossible to attack him in public. This is not for his own protection: it is for yours. The Defier will never fight within range of a populated space, and part of it appears to be that if the town was Dracon for example, he would wipe it off the face of the planet if he were to fight inside it. The Defier will acknowledge you if you arrive to challenge him however, and nod to you once before taking the shortest path to the outskirts where the battle will not hurt civilians.
In terms of mechanics itself, the Defier will be a random event that may appear at the end of a quest or as a site-wide event. The Defier's strength will be adjusted to the overall strength of the party fighting him. You do not have to fight the Defier. There is no shame in simply allowing him to continue on his path. Do not take this opponent lightly. He will meet force with equal force, if you fight him without intent to kill he will not attempt to kill either. However in order to win you must push yourself to your absolute limits, possibly even beyond them and the Defier will meet you in kind. If you do this, but find yourself inadequate and wish to survive, you will unfortunately be forced to prostrate yourself to The Defier and very earnestly beg for forgiveness.
If by some miracle or work of insanity you are able to slay The Defier however, your entire party will be remembered as Heroes among Heroes and collectively be known as The Defiers for your deed. The one who lands the killing blow will also be known as a Slayer of Fundamentals.
For reference, here's an example of the only ability The Defier has been remembered to use. He has many more.
Landslide Blade
Ability Type: Martial/Magical
Ability Effect: Strike the earth with your blade, projecting Earth-Aspected energy in a line. Causes an explosive eruption of earth in a line 15 feet wide and 60 feet long. Can annihilate castle walls and similar fortress defences in the area effected. Deals damage to one melee ally and one ranged ally, worth 60 HP. Each Defend action reduces damage by half, requiring two Defend actions to nullify damage.
Ability Cost: Can be used every two turns. Requires one action to charge, and another to release.
