Andor Outer Territories; Evening. Waning orange light breaks over the rocks and out across the distant plains, painting brown the sparse, defiant trees that dot this patch of mountainous landscape. Memory of the day's heat still hangs tepid in the air, and the smell of upturned gravel and dust permeates the place. It is one of the many great hills in northeastern Andor province, but even at this low elevation, a few miles of the surrounding lands can be seen stretching out onto the horizon through the canopy. So this was the place. Dried rock and gravel crunched under the metal toes of Ruse's boots as made his way with heavy footfalls up what remained of the foot of the mountain, coming to rest against a great stone jutting up from the land. It emerged at least twelve feet from the dirt where he stood, a grand and recognizable landmark that made it the place for their party's meeting, as well as a sign of the gradual transition from dry dirt and gravel to solid rock protrusions he was observing as he made his way. These small mountains of Andor weren't so much mountains as rocky hills, but the trees still managed to crowd the landscape enough not to allow them easy sight of their quarry. If these animals really were working as a pack and attacking en masse, it would certainly be better to be the ones doing the hunting. [[OOC: Dropping this early as to not limit anyone's entrances. Arrive, or have already arrived in whichever way you see fit, and we'll get started.]]

Kairu stepped out of the rather flashy carriage, a large grin on his face after all Joran was paying even if he didn't know it. Kairu had not brought his money with him, taking money to such a wild and rough place because who does that right? Kairu looked over to see that they were not the first here, a beastfolk stood some short way from them. He assumed that this man was here for the same reason, the first thing that Kairu noticed about him was that he was well decorated with various scars, tattoos and the like. An inquisitive grin came across his face, it would be nice to see one of his own kin in action. Kairu took a look at the sun setting as the orange began to scatter across the horizon, it was really quite a pretty sight and Kairu whistled.
"Well would you look at that Joran, oh that reminds me Presto is supposedly joining us. I did not take her for the adventuring type." Kairu also had something else to look forward to, it would be nice to see the musician once again. Kairu then began to make his way up to the other beastfolk, had Kairu seen him around Andor before? He could not recall, not that it mattered they were all here for the mountain lions after all. When he arrived at the meeting area, he lifted up his hand in a friendly manner.
"Hey~ I assume you are here about the mountain lion problem too right? I am Kairu, Nice to meet ya." Kairu showed a fanged grin to the man before him. Kairu was not looking forward to actually working however this was something that was important for the shop and Joran, that made it important to Kairu too.

It had really been a shame that the two had had to take a carriage all the way out for this little 'adventure' of theirs. Joran really wasn't that keen to be out here, anyway; hunting mountain lions, of all things, was an uncomfortable notion. The money was needed for the shop, however, so he had to do his best to press through. That still didn't help the somewhat bumpy ride they had taken to get here. Of less help was that he knew from the moment he had stepped foot into the carriage with Kairu that he would ultimately be paying for the transport. Unfortunate, but once again something that had to be done for the shop. When the pair arrived and his employee had stepped out, Joran made a quick payment to the driver for the trip, with a promise of further payment if he would wait to take them back on the return trip. While this elicited only grunt and grumble from the aged coach-driver, Joran was still sure they were guaranteed a way home.
Once the business was concluded, the shopkeeper found himself drawn to take in the surroundings; of primary note was the sunset, thanks to Kairu's comment. It certainly was beautiful. But what was this of the young girl, Presto, accompanying them as well? Even with the aid of magic on her side, Joran found himself a bit unsure as to her safety. This was something that he would have to keep an eye on.
"It's certainly a surprise, isn't it?" Joran's response was on the short side, but the sight of another individual ahead of them had taking hold of his attention. This was most likely one of their fellow 'sell-swords '. He couldn't help but stifle a chuckle to himself, as he considered himself to be nothing of the sort. On the other hand, it seemed an accurate term for their new companion as he most definitely looked the part of a fighting man.
"And I am Joran. It's a pleasure." The man reached with his hand, intent on shaking hands with the warrior that they seemed to be working with for the day. Or night, concerning the setting sun.

''..Seriously who the hell does he think he is? 'Sorry Presto I can't shell out the money for a carriage' PAH! Stars don't walk! I'm too famous to walk! In my right mind I'd fire him! Does he have ANY idea how long it takes to walk here... UGH! My dress will get all dusty.. He really is the worst manager in all the world...''
The petite girl was in a rather stormy mood after her 'oh-so-great' manager didn't arrange a carriage for her to get to her mission meeting point because it took 'too much money out of their budget.' Presto had come here for just that! .. A concert had fell through so she needed to make some money on the side.. so she decided to sign up for a mission that Joran and Kairu had also signed up for. It made sense since she knew she could trust them to protect her if some lions got too close to comfort... But, even so, she didn't really want to kill a lion. Maybe just spook them or something. In hindsight, she had taken a job she was a little apprehensive to actually do. They were just innocent animals after all, trying to get on in life.. just like them.
She kicked the dust off her thigh high black boots. She wore an outfit more suited for combat. She wore red stockings, a black and red marching outfit, and her hat Allegretto that had been recoloured black and red to match the rest of her ensemble. Her usual platforms were missing, so she could be more mobile in the coming battle. The performer marched to the top of the hill and she made eye contact with the trio who had already arrived. She raced forwards, her mood lifting all of a sudden. ''Kaiiiiii! Mr. Jorannnnnnnn! ..Hmmm? Another adorable beastman? C'mereeee~'' She yelled, leaping upon him. He was rather odd looking.. it seems all the beastmen she had met so far had a rather unconventional look to them. He was clad in tattoos. ''Listen up! ..You saved me last time, so I'm going to protect you this time!'' She winked, smiling at the trio.

we're Gonna dance the night away | | The last, but certainly not least to arrive on the scene was a certain violet-headed elf of the desert. Much like another in attendance, she too was a performer, but she did not have to worry so much about her appearance. Her outfit was both travel and performance worthy on its own and even if something did get mucked up, she knew a little cantrip from her past to clean it right up.
Of course, getting her scimitar polished didn't help her timing. Still, it was a worthwhile investment. Keeping it in good condition when she had the coin to do so would make it better for her in the long run. Aaliyah took a look at some of the others present, and a couple things stood out in her mind.
"Hmm, seems like I'm the only elf this time~" she commented, not terribly surprised. They were closer to human territory anyway. Doing a second sweep, she noted....almost none of them had armor. Well. This was going to make things a little trickier. "Hopefully big and strong over there can shield those of us not so hardy, but I can try to patch us up if we get hit~"

Ruse's face was as placid as the rock face behind him as the makings of their throwtogether fellowship leaked in along the roads. It was a little nostalgic, working with a group, but he managed to keep the scorn off his face. The first approached, a pair; the cheery beastfolk earned himself a look of unapologetic scrutiny, but he shook it off. "Ruse." he answered frankly; he acknowledged each of them with a nod and gave the latter a firm, if apprehensive, handshake. It was about that time that the remainder of the expected participants began to arrive. Now, a generous portion of the Terran populace might consider Ruse's outward appearance a little unwelcoming: intimidating, even. This was not coincidence, nor accidental, and so the last thing he could have been expecting was for this bizarre young woman to throw her arms around him in such an enthusiastic and friendly fashion. For a moment, he went blank: a blink, eyes sinking down; stiffening, lip slowly curling into a snarl, murderous intent... But then she moved on, oblivious, and his expression receeded, though not without some residual tension. He never had time to feel disdain for such an untested youth to be here, what was to be the setting of a slaughter; instead, he waited a few moments in silence for them to finish. The elf woman acknowledged him, but he could give no reciprocation. [OOC: Brief Pause for Dialogue between you talkative folk] "Let's go;" He would interject coldly, after reunions and introductions past their time. "There won't be any hope for us if the sun sets." It takes a short walk beyond the rendezvous point to reach the mountain lion's territory. The stink of predators drifts down from between the rocks and trees, and the mountainside seems more and more quiet but for the party's movements. Soon, a high rock face is visible beyond a break in the trees. Ruse may not have been the first to notice, but the scenery around him stopped him dead, and hands sprung out to both sides to beckon the party behind him to stop. Tensions about, and eyes to the rocks above, where a chorus of low snarls rumbled down upon them from above. OOC: The Staredown!~ Ranged attacks only this round, as they are still up on the rock face.

Kairu had nothing to say at this point, he did however keep an eye on their surroundings. It would not do well for them to be ambushed by the very thing they hunted, not to mention embarrassing. Kairu's previous excitement about working with one of his kin had quickly faded once the tension began to ooze out of him, it took Kairu all he had to prevent himself from snarling back. Seemed like this one had either an attitude problem or a past that was best left buried. He put his attention back on the rest of the group as he listened to anything they had to say.
Eventually when they began to move Kairu was hit by the stench of death, clearly they were close to a hunting ground and most likely the hunting grounds of the beasts they sought after. He did not let this show on his face however, he did not wish to spook the others in case they had not noticed. The whole silence of the place made Kairu slightly edgy, it had been a while since he had seen combat not since he had settled down in Andor. Then he noticed the lions, just as it seemed Ruse had also there was no time to admire his senses however as it seemed a fight was at hand. Kairu wasted no time in taking the initiative, conjuring forth six tendrils of blue arcane fire. He launched the spear pointed ends of these tendrils at all six of the lions, hitting each of them in a spectacularly colourful fashion. He could smell the singed fur from where he stood however that was not enough to fell these beasts. Kairu then proceed to put on his dagger dusters and waited for the enemy to come to them.

With the arrival of their musical friend and an Elf Joran was wholly unfamiliar with, it seemed their little expedition was ready to get underway. The walk itself was no real trouble at this point; however, he did note as they went that the warrior, who had served as their guide as they went, gave off an air of generally not being pleasant to be around. He was content to cut that one up to the man being a warrior. The strange Beastfolk that led them looked like the kind that had seen several battles before this one. Joran could only hope it would be enough to carry them through. Nonetheless, he couldn't help but place a hand to the dagger at his belt as they walked. It was a surprise when their leader, this 'Ruse', motioned them all to stop. Worse still, were the growls coming from above. The beasts were upon them! At the range they were at -and not wanting to make the dumb decsion to charge- Joran found he could do nothing but draw his dirk and prepare for what was about to happen. If anything, he would have to help defend young Presto and the others as the animals came in. Luckily, they did not seem to be sitting ducks in their entirety. Range proved to mean nothing to magic as Kairu sent bolts of arcane energy upwards, most likely spearing all of the pack. With help like that and the experience of the nearby swordsman, their chance of survival today seemed quite good.

She tapped her foot, waiting rather impatiently for the final member of the group. Materialising in a cloud of dust on the horizon, appeared a voluptuous woman with purple hair and a curved scimitar. Hmph.. How am I supposed to make them watch me with.. them... jiggling around all over the place... Presto growled internally, eyeing at the girls rather.. impressive physique with a discerning eye. How does she even manage to fight with them strapped to her chest!? Hm!? Without much introduction, the crowd had departed the meeting spot and were walking down a mountainous path. Presto looked all around her, humming a soft tune to herself. Something was a bit.. off, and it wasn't just that smell of death that hung in the air. Bones and other fragments of animal detritus littered the path ahead- No doubt, they were going in to a dangerous place. The minuscule performer tried to keep her wits about her- but when a low, defiant growl echoed from above on an outcrop.. her heart froze. And then, a cacophony of savage roars. They were coming. The little startlet hadn't fought in a while, and she brought up her baton in defence. Kairu fired off a spell and she realised she couldn't afford to be scared- she had to contribute to this battle. ''It's my turn now!'' Racing to the front line, deep gold strings of what appeared like lines of sheet music threaded around her petite form. ''Strands of symphony come forth! Altissimo Libero!'' She voiced the incantation. Not that the talented mage needed to, but she believed it added a little extra flair and style. A gold music note bursted forth and rushed towards one of the lions on the cliff, hitting it directly- emitting a loud crash of sonic sound on impact. It sounded painful. Presto prayed the burst of sound would be enough to scare away the creatures and prevent bloodshed.

we're Gonna dance the night away | | The group departed in mostly silence, following a very short 'let's go' from their oh-so-fearless leader. At least, that's how he came across. Aaliyah did note the small girl in their group and, more importantly, her attire. Was she some kind of musician? They really did start young these days didn't they.
Though she didn't voice it, as the group departed Aaliyah was already planning if she had to bail. She was not the type to stick around if things got bad, but she'd at least stick around as long as they still had a chance. With a slight delay, she then followed after them with a slight hop and a skip to her stride. It was something she did naturally, almost always making her movements a little rhythmic.
"Don't suppose anybody has a fish we can throw to keep them distracted?" she couldn't help but comment as they reached the lions. Everything on the way hadn't really phased her, not really being anything new, so she was just hopeful they'd be able to resolve this fight quickly and quietly. In preparation though she drew the curved blade from its rather obtuse sheath. |

Ruse's sword slid slowly and deliberately from it's sheath. This was not "calm". Eyes bored up into the felines looming above, and contention was met with primal, territorial aggression. However, he and they alike would startle just a moment as Kairu's spears of ether and Presto's vibrant evocation roared over his shoulders, pummeling the lot of them and for a moment looking to send them reeling. Something beyond whim, however, spurred these creatures on, and fears quickly turned to instinctual rage. Paws and heavy bodies bounded down the rocks with a fearsome agility, and within moments, a flood of teeth and claws and flesh was upon them. - - - Ruse had expected more attention: then again, he hadn't stopped to ask the talents of his companions. Regret wasn't the word for what he felt, but as two turned from their paths and descended on the canine, in addition to the one already fixed on him, a mixture of alarm and disdain gripped him tightly. There were more of these things coming: already roars and snarls could be heard out of sight; regardless of whether he cared about the beastfolk's life, they would need every blade if they were going to get out of this alive. The mercenary gritted his teeth. Two claws fell on the hilt and lower blade of his sword, both Ruse's hands bracing to catch the massive feline as it fell on him. The exertion caused him to bare his teeth, and met the creature's feral gaze for an instant before kicking the creature heavily in the abdomen, knocking it to the ground and giving him the moment he needed to disengage. On the tail of the last of Kairu's attackers, the fingers of his clawed gauntlet tore into its shoulder tissue, a massive heave throwing it to the side, and hopefully off of its prey. In the moment, he could not yet see the state of his beastfolk companion. OOC: Ouch ^^ the dice are not always kind. Here we go. Kairu was faster than the first lion to approach him, he ducked underneath it as it pounced for him. He brought his dagger duster to bear in a upper cut to the second Mountain Lion at the same time as Ruse tore along it's rear shoulder, he grinned as it yelped in agony from the combo attack. Kairu's fist felt something crunch as it went into the lower jaw of the Lion for sure it would feel that one. "What's the matter kitty cat? Don't like your meal fighting back?" Kairu had messed up, the second lion swung a claw at him scratching him across the chest. He had also not accounted for a third lion to pounce on him. He felt the air leave his body as it was knocked out of him, the third Lion proceeded to claw at him while he was pinned to the ground. Kairu still had a defiant look in his eyes however, he would not be beaten by this fur ball.

It had been worse than Joran could imagine. In what felt like an instant, the pack of wild animals came bounding down from the cliffs and crashed into their party like a tidal wave to the shore. By some odd miracle, the shopkeeper had been spared the attentions of the lions. Worse, was that instead the animals focused on the others, with one targeting young Presto and a shocking three swarming around his employee. It was almost too much for him to take in in the moment, but when one beast leaped over Kairu and found itself facing right toward Joran, he had to act fast. He was sure he couldn't handle one of these creatures on his own; he needed to think of something else. His thoughts reminded him of the pouch he carried at his waist. He had an idea. As the beast snarled at him, Joran reached into his pouch and pulled a much smaller pouch containing just what he needed. Taking the drawstring between his teeth, he opened the bag and emptied its contents in the form of a small cloud of red dust straight into the eyes of the lion. This elicited a roar of rage from the beast, hopefully having the intended effect. Just as he turned his attention back to the group while dropping the now empty sack, he saw the terrible sight of Kairu being clawed across his chest while another lion tackled him to the ground. Kairu was most assuredly in danger! Thanks to the lion before him being 'preoccupied' and the others' attentions elsewhere, Joran felt the slightest bit of courage to come to his employee's aid. With a possibly unnecessary battle-cry, he rushed the lion keeping his friend down and drove his dagger into the creatures side. The roar it gave in response made him almost regret his decision. Hopefully, he wouldn't find himself in Kairu's place within the next few moments.

''Okay okay~ I'll be counting on you guys! Don't let me down~ I have to keep my face pretty!'' She joked with a playful wink- as usually, the jubilant little ball of energy wasn't taking it seriously. In an instant, the tigers were upon them. There was no running now. Presto had tried to get the beasts to leave but she had only served to aggravate them. Twirling her baton defensively, she retreated to the back lines. It became apparent that it would be for naught however, as a tiger came straight for her. The girl failed to notice however, as Kairu was knocked down. Her defensive instincts kicked in. ''K-Kairu! Str- UGH!'' She was suddenly slugged in the chest by another ,lion pouncing on her from the side, her baton knocked from her grip. She was only small, and resisting against the lion was a herculean effort. Small globules of drool fell from the lions mouth on to the girl as she frantically searched for her baton. we're Gonna dance the night away | | Unfortunately, things did not start off well for them. The lions did not follow the rule of engaging one at a time and swarmed the team, though oddly leaving the human guy alone. May be they prefered dog? Strange, but Aaliyah would not question the taste of lions. Except when that taste involved her! One of the lions made a beeline for her, and so she threw herself out of the way into a dodge roll to get out of its line of charging. That was uncomfortably close. For one of the Beastfolk though it was a bit closer than that, as she saw him getting struck by multiple lions.
"Hold on, I'll help you!" her free hand began to glow with a green light. She held it out towards Kairu and as she did, the light transferred from her to him, his wounds mending as the lions inflicted them. It wasn't perfect nor was it as flashy as she'd like, but this was a spell she learned out of practicality rather than showmanship. At least it would patch up most of his injuries for now, but that left her still with a lion in front of her.
"You want some? C'mon now, show me what you got!"she 'taunted' the lion as she bounced from one foot to the other, giving a couple swings of the scimitar not out of actually attempting to hit but hoping to scare it. This had no effect though, as it snarled and likely readied itself for another attempt at the juicy bits of her throat. She was ready for it though and this time would hit back! |
